Ivanka does her perfect-poise routine when Germans hiss and boo at her for talking about her father as a champion of women.

She was on panel — alongside Angela Merkel, Queen Màxima of the Netherlands, and International Monetary Fund director Christine Lagardeon — at the W-20 where the topic was women's empowerment and entrepreneurship at the W-20.

Video at the link.

IN THE COMMENTS: Freeman Hunt asked, "How could anyone not like her?," and I answered:
There's something robotic and trancelike about her demeanor. It's interesting to me that people don't dislike her for that glossy, plastic, stage-y quality, which actually reminds me of Hillary Clinton. I don't myself dislike her, but I'm fascinated that people don't call her out for the Stepford Wives aura that so many political women have been mocked for.

But Jackie Kennedy was a similar case. People loved it in her. I guess if you read as beautiful and you don't misbehave, people will accept a woman who seems anesthetized.
And AReasonableMan says, "Drudge's front page currently featuring Ivanka is pretty funny." Here's the part he means, with Ivanka in the middle — looking like a sensibly beautiful woman — flanked by Madonna displaying elongated Jayne-Mansfield-style breasts and some absurdly plastic-surgeried human Barbie doll. Sometimes I envy the SJWs.

It would be so easy to attribute this to German anti-Semitism.

The camera really loves her. The Dems have not yet been able to find a successful angle of attack on her, but they're creative and persistent. Someday we will come to realize how the inner beauty and radiant intellect of Chelsea far surpasses the superficial good looks of Ivanka.

Women used to express their Daddy Issues at a man symbolic of their father.

Now they express their Daddy Issues at the Man's Daughter.

We get it, women: Daddy Didn't Love You The Right Way. He was too domineering or he wasn't there at all. Or he thought you should study a subject in University more job-oriented than Women's Studies. Or he didn't understand your Lesbian Phase. Or he wasn't supportive when you shaved your head.

Or, perhaps you suspect that if he found out about your abortion he would be saddened by your action.

Uday and Qusay are dead, thanks to the US military. A good thing too, since they delighted in raping women and then killing them and feeding the remains to dogs, making Iraqi Olympic soccer players who lost kick concrete balls, and many other sadistic acts.

You certainly wouldn't be stupid and frivolous enough to compare those two genuine monsters to men who never committed such acts on the basis of petty political partisanship would you?

Mike (MJB Wolf) said...

Her poise is enchanting to me. I don't find her robotic or stepfordish because she has a very self-confident and composed air and speaks directly with meaning. I found Hillary to be constantly obscuring herself and the real meaning of her words with her speechifying manner. The forced attempts at "humor" (i.e. "Like with a cloth?") were cloddish and more awkward than funny. Comparing daughter-to-daughter I see Chelsea's inherited all her mother's grace and wit, while Ivanka has a completely different style than her father, one more suited to an executive or politician than the "reality star" stream of consciousness style her dad is famous for.

Years ago the wife and I watched The Apprentice. Several seasons in they added Ivanka to the boardroom. We both agreed he had raised quite the woman. Here she is on TV, presumably not being fed lines, and making intelligent comments and criticisms of the players and their actions during the most recent round.

It was a very stark contrast to the Paris Hiltons of the world.

I agree with Althouse. think Ivanka gets a pass while other women don't (many criticize Melania for her robotic like behavior). I think it's because her father is so vulgar and the divorce from her parents was so public and would possibly be traumatizing for many kids. Couple that backstory with the fact she converted to be an Orthodox Jew to marry her husband and it adds up to sincerity.

This would be a good time for those critiquing her demeanor (cough, cough) to revisit those episodes. She was the highlight of the boardroom, and not because of looks.

Ivanka seems poised and very 'contained'. She speaks quite softly, slowly and in a measured way. I don't find it robotic but rather very much someone who is exerting strong self control and thinking carefully about each utterance. Rightly so, since her every move, word or facial expression is under such scrutiny.

Trump also, when he isn't stumping for President or addressing a large crowd, also has a rather soft voice.

The pose in the linked video, finger under her chin strikes me as a subliminal...keep your chin up pose. Stay strong. Stay poised.

In some ways she is everything her father is not -- as in not vulgar.

She learned her robotic poise from her days as a model I am sure.

The Trump kids turned out OK because of his wife IVANA. If you read anything about him, you would know he did not raise his kids outside of paying for tuition. The only thing The Donald did was choose wives who are good mothers. I find it strange no one mentions Ivana or Marla.

Queen Maxima of the Netherlands is an accomplished woman who had a finance career before her marriage and has done a lot for disadvantaged women in places where women have little access to finance and autonomy.

Not a coincidence Ivanka gets to sit in on a meeting with Chinese Premier and she is suddenly granted a patent in China. Zero benefit to US people.

CStanley said...

Her demeanor is poised and self controlled in the extreme, so it could certainly be seen as robotic. But it seems to conceal something much different than what Hillary Clinton works to hide....so I would not compare the two or call Ivanka robotic.

One thing that strikes me is that-other than the age differential- Ivanka comes across more as I would imagine a daughter of DJT and Melanie than of DJT and Ivana. But maybe that's the fashion model type of demeanor, concealing emotion with a graceful but contrived pose.

As for how people could dislike her....part politics and part jealousy, I'd presume.

Seems like it.

(Merkel and Lagardeon are politicos [the IMF is 100% the creature of political process of the member countries, after all]. So they'd know empowerment, give 'em that.

Maxima is hereditary royalty. Nice, empowering work, if you can get it, I guess.

I suppose the interesting thing here is lack of entrepreneurial women that don't happen to be married to a politico.

But that's the W-20, I guess. Because "G-20 stuff for people with vaginas specifically" is obviously going to be productive, right?)

So you naturally believe Africans are so stupid as to allow white people to fly on over and kill endangered species? Because the Africans, being black, don't know which animal might be endangered and which might not be? And that they may not know that some of the "endangered" animals are at the end of their lives or must be culled for other reasons, nuances that white people might understand but black Africans definitely not? You apply. You enter a lottery or you buy a limited permit. It is legal. It is not accelerating the demise of a species. Except for deeply ignorant progressives.

"I always support your thoughts. You thoughts make you 'you', you know?"

"I've just been thinking. I'm tired of working at the coffeeshop."

"I understand. You're too good for that place."

"So what I've been thinking is, we dress in black tonight, go to my Dad's house, sneak in and kill him, then take off on the road. Live life day by day. Dusty roads, diners, gas stations in the middle of nowhere. REAL life."

"Uh...."

"We'd bury him in the backyard and then we'd be free. Free! It'll be just like a movie! Lovers on the run!"

"Maybe we could just head off on the road by itself. You know, without the 'killing' thing."

"That won't work. I've given it a lot of thought, and I can never be free until my Daddy's dead. I'll kill him, and you'll cut off his head."

"Cut off his head?"

"Yeah. That way he won't be able to look at me anymore."

"But he'll be dead, anyway."

"Yeah, but it will be more so with his head cut off. I can tell when he is looking at me, even when he isn't there."

"I don't know. Have you talked to your psychiatrist about this?"

"Yeah. She says my Father is the Root of All My Problems. I really like her."

"So she is okay with you killing him?"

"Well, I didn't exactly tell her that part, but I think it was understood."

"I don't know: maybe you should talk to her one more time."

"But these dreams of killing my Father torment me. They won't leave me alone until I do it."

"Maybe you could talk to your psychiatrist about THAT."

"Do you think that would help?"

"I'm sure it will. If she says Killing Your Father is okay then we'll talk about it."

"Okay: if it is that important to you. I just need to let my Dad know about the appointment..."

"Why is that?"

"Because he pays for all my visits..."

Ivanka's looks are mostly the product of $$$$ and training. The best dermatologists, dentists, fitness trainers...... She was raised from birth to be in the spotlight. Her and Chelsea learned how to maintain neutral expressions in their early teens thanks to their fathers bad behavior. Imagine having to attend school with your classmates all buzzing about how Marla is following Dad with her wedding dress in hand or Monica and her stained blue dress.
The real issue here is that Trump did give women powerful positions in construction back in the 1980's - an industry that still has less women. Trump has a history of promoting women, Kellyanne shows he continues to do so. All his wives and daughters have/had their own businesses. No stay at home Mom's in the Trump family. So why does the audience react shocked - when confronted with well know and obvious fact that Trump believes in equality.

Of all the subjects interviewed in this documentary, she is quite obviously the most intelligent and thoughtful.

Very interesting, thanks for the link.

Even as a teenager, you can see that's she's poised and very cautious. She holds herself very still and doesn't emote very much, even when she's talking about paparazzi swarming over her school the day her parents got divorced.

She's also an active speaker, in the same sense that someone can be an active listener. There are many pauses in her speech when she reestablishes eye contact and gives a little nod of emphasis. So it comes off as

"The United States is the only advanced country that doesn't have a leave policy, so I'm very proud of my father... "

So to answer Althouse's question, I'd wager that she comes off in person as a very empathetic person who pays a lot of attention to the person she's speaking with. Add in the good looks (which I agree look somewhat plastic) and I'm not surprised that she doesn't draw much hate.

Zach said...
