How would you like to be the one person photographed to appear under the headline "Political Divide on Campuses Hardens After Trump’s Victory"?

I had to laugh at this grim-faced young woman in her shadowy Ann Arbor bedroom, embodying post-election trauma for the NYT.

Oddly enough, this person was pro-Trump. She started out "ecstatic"....
But her mood of celebration quickly faded when students held an evening vigil on campus — to mourn the results — and her biology teacher suspended class on the assumption, Ms. Delekta said, that students would be too upset to focus.

She was outraged. “Nobody has died,” Ms. Delekta said. “The United States has not died. Democracy is more alive than ever. Simply put, the American people voted and Trump won.”

If you're trying to become a conservative policymaker I'd think you'd feel great. Not only are they highlighting you from your peers they're also discrediting your competition.

Mr. Kim said he felt not only disappointed but worried for his well-being since the election. “Immediately after that election, I think what I really needed to do was just cry

Most people realize the difference between fantasy and reality around the time they start kindergarten. Those who only realize this in college probably do need a special room, one with cushioned walls.

What the mourners want is a recurring do-over until the American people get the answer right.

We thought it was an election, while the mourners thought it was a test. What we now see is what happens when the study guide gives them one answer while others submit a different answer and get it counted right. That must be cheating, or something like it.

That's not what was in the study guide!

Someone should do something!

Was it on this site I saw the video yesterday of the college students being asked about sanctuary college campuses?

That was fascinating.

They were willing to extend sanctuary campuses for all sorts of things. Parking tickets. Paying off student loans. Illegal immigration.

One wonders what young adults learn in college.

The antidote seems to be repeating a mantra that "Democrats won the popular vote election." And therefore the Democrats are our undocumented rulers who just need to demand the power to rule and shout down the Fake News sites saying that Trump won.

This works best using Faked Data. And we can confidently say we will probably never know who won in States that are denying Jill a Recount.

Another student, Maryam Ahmed, said she had been one of about 1,000 students who marched in the campus vigil the day after the election. She said the marchers were positive but feared for their safety. Her friends were passing on text messages — which turned out to be false — warning that white militias were going to invade the streets of Ann Arbor.

FAKE NEWS!

The American militias have class diversity by choice, not force, unlike institutional class diversity. Why the prejudice?

I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will be judged by their colorful clump of cells, rather than by the content of their character/principles.

Well, that's one way to interpret the moral message.

Couldn't the NYT dig up an expert from this millennium?

This reminds me of a class discussion in Criminology in the early 90s. One radical student described a horrible sounding case of judicial misconduct which as it fleshed out began to sound somewhat familiar. Another student asked if she was referring to the Scottsboro case, which she affirmed. When asked how a case from 1931 shed light on the current judicial system she claimed "nothing's changed".

That should be the left's mantra: nothing's changed. Everything is exactly the way it was when I was a young radical.

Dear Prof. Althouse,

Congratulations on your retirement. I strongly suspect that it may be your gain, but is a tremendous and irreplaceable loss to Wisconsin and to your students.

You have been at your very best, over the past year or so, taking apart your beloved New York Times. Here is a link to today's Fresh Air with Terry Gross (NPR/WHYY) in which she interviews Times editor Dean Baquet:

http://www.npr.org/2016/12/08/504806512/new-york-times-executive-editor-on-the-new-terrain-of-covering-trump

With low expectations for any hard questioning of her guest, I was nevertheless favorably interested in this conversation. I am betting that you will find it blogworthy.

O well, whatever the faculty has been doing, it's too late for Prof. Althouse to fix it.

I was in a bachelor's program a few years ago as an older student, twice the age of the average student. Paid (borrowed) FULL PRICE too - no grants or anything like that available for one getting BS #2. Since I'd already had the experience of getting a BS degree and paying off the first loan, and decades of working I knew the value of a dollar.

If I was attending a university that cancelled a class due to the outcome of an election, I'd be harassing the administration for a full refund for that day, OR a makeup class. Either way, I'd be damn sure I'd be getting full value for my money.

ALP: "... I'd be harassing the administration for a full refund for that day,..."

The first thing that I thought of. Do the math: there might be 500 class hours a year? For $50K a year, so very roughly $100/hour. Plus the disruption --now you have to make up the class by jamming it into the rest of your week or month, and picking up the thread, which is not always easy. Plus pain, suffering, emotional distress and profound alienation from your alma mater.

I think the bidding opens at a full ride for a term, whenever they pull this stunt.

Hillary looks like a Bond villain in that poster behind Mr. Kim.

University administrators cater to the organized whiners on every campus, which is almost always a small percentage of faculty and students. U-M has 42,000 students (24,000 undergrads and 18,000 grad students). A vigil of 1,000 (which no doubt included the fringe folk of AA) is relatively small.

The NYT shows all the students on both sides in Bladerunner lighting. "All over America lamps are going out on campuses. We shall not see them relit in our lifetime."

But even though the foul workers of America have elected a Nazi, fascist, Russian, capitalist image of themselves, there is hope. For even though the Forces of Light have lost the Presidency, the Senate, the House, The Supreme Court and most state administrations, they still hold the big cities. These bastions of progressive politics can show the rest of America how to do it right. A few minor reforms in the big cities will burnish their credentials to represent minorities - find jobs for the 50% of black men who are unemployed; fund the pensions the police, firemen and teachers of the black middle class expect; raise the high school graduation rate in the public schools to 80%; stop aborting blacks disproportionately which is causing a genocide; stop the massacre of young black men by other young black men.

The universities are another Democratic stronghold. There we'll work for: free play dough for all students; free puppies; end the requirement that the university supplies bathrooms since that suggests we are different from dogs; convert the former bathrooms into fully equipped safe spaces with Crayons, construction paper and balloons; require Trump supporters to war a yellow star with the word "Trump" at the center unless they opt for a swastika.

And California - which gave Hillary her popular vote margin. Ah, California will lead the way out of the Union. You say Hillary Exit - Hexit 2016. We say Calexit 2018 and Hillary for our first president.

The "conservative on campus" meme turns a few things upside-down.

Such as, the assumption that to be Left is to be a rebel. For if they are rebels, they seem to be very conformist rebels, enmeshed in a culture that quickly punishes even small deviations from accepted positions.

Such as, the assumption that taking a Left position on campus implies that one is courageous, when it takes no courage at all to run with the herd and a great deal to depart from it (let alone place oneself in opposition to it).

Thus the need to marginalize non-comformists as anti-science crackpots, or as bigots, or worse?

Being a Professor sure is a great Job! Wow, I wish I could have called into work and told them I was sooo upset - crying maybe- at Trump's election & was taking the day off. And then I could have told all my subordinates to do the same thing. After a little "grieving" we could go all have played some golf.

Sadly, I have an actual job, that helps a company produce things. So, we couldn't just shut down and be sad.

But a professor - well that's different. Who cares if he cancels a class? Its not like he's doing anything useful except collecting a paycheck.

It's attention whoring. See it all the time on social media. Works like this

1) Precious snowflake distorts and exaggerates a Trump statement to its worst possible meaning, has a meltdown in public, is showered with attention by friends and gets Virtue Points for "caring" so much about "the minorities that are about to be rounded up and sent to the death camps".

2) Her friends also gain Virtue Points for showing compassion and empathy in coddling her little temper tantrum

We are calling it Trumpism By Proxy. It's a competition amoung Leftists to see who is the most righteous. As it stands, the woman who put off relationships because of Trump and the guy who admitted himself to a psyche ward after election night are neck and neck.

I find it interesting because a big reason the Left was blind to a Trump win was all the false realities they had created and moved in. Now that those have been shattered by reality, they are busily making new ones.

Fen said...

It's also important to follow and analyze their behavior. We knew the Left was emotional, but this is a whole new level. And it's something we can exploit in the future.
